What is The World Students GO OZA Championship?

The World Students GO OZA Championship is a championship in which 16 students chosen from various countries around the world, including from Asia, compete. It was founded in 2003, and the 8th championship will be held in March 2010. Not only the players but also the organizers are students: it's an international championship run by students for students.

This championship is held not only to decide the world's number one student player but also to promote exchange among go-playing students around the world. Besides the go competition, sightseeing events are also organized for the participants.

Until the 7th championship, the players were chosen by recommendation by their national go associations, but as of the 8th championship preliminary championships are being held on the Internet with the cooperation of Pandanet Ltd. Changing the selection method in this way means that more students can participate, so in 2010 we can expect a high-level championship with many strong players from around the world competing.

Tournament conditions:
1. The tournament is a four-round Swiss-system tournament with 16 players. All games are on even.
2. The time allowance is one hour per player, followed by byo-yomi of 30 seconds per move.
3. Rules are the Japanese Rules of Go. The komi is 6¨o points.
4. The draw for the first round will be held at the reception. However, if players from the same zone are paired against each other, the draw will be redone.
5. Pairings from the second round on will be conducted automatically by computer.

Requirements for entry:

1. The representative must be an amateur player.
2. The representative must be a university or college student below 30 years of age.
3. Participants should be able to e-mail in English or Japanese.

Other points

•Round-trip travel expenses and accommodation and meal costs will be borne by the sponsors. (Participants are requested to buy their tickets themselves; the cost will be paid, together with expenses for the stay in Japan, after Round 1 on March 2.)
•Breakfast will be provided at the hotel and lunch at the tournament venue.
•Players are free after the games. Please arrange for your own dinner.
